Trying to recover data

I have a OS windows 98 and had a lot of data.
I am trying to recover the data .
I am able to start the Live CD but once started I get the Live CD ububtu page
Tr to start it - I come up with a message
Kernel Panic not syncing - Out of memory and no killable process.

Can anyone point me what needs be done .

How much ram do you have?

I believe the minimum amount of ram to run the Rescue-Remix is 192 megs. If you are trying to run the Ubuntu Desktop, you need 256 megs.
