Dead on an Update

Maybe I should not have dabbled in Linux?
I have and was pleasantly surprised to get an aged Thinkpad 600 working with 9.04 Jaunty Jackoff Microsoft.
BUT. Thinking I'm smart, I did an update 6 months after it's release and now screwed the Boot right up to a blank screen.
I'm sure my stuff is still in there. HELP Please!
Maybe I should have loaded an earlier version eh?

First off, Jaunty is really
First off, Jaunty is really stable. I'm running it right now. I don't see how an update would cause any trouble. No, you shouldn't need to run an earlier release. You may be happier with adding more ram, but older machines are very well supported.
Find the live cd and boot it again. If it boots, then you can mount your drive and access your files. If it doesn't boot, well you have hardware trouble. Try to boot memtest to see if your ram is intact. If you can boot but can't access your files, then your hard disk is giving you trouble and you can try imaging it.
If you have any further trouble, please post back.
Andrew, Thank you for
Andrew,
Thank you for replying.
I only have the burnt ISO installation disc I made from a Ubuntu download.
Something definitely happened after the update. I have tried numerous suggestions with SUDO commands (dpkg phigh etc.) and done Memtest and no further forward.
I have booted ok with Ubuntu v5.1 so the hardware is fine.
When I go into the boot menu, I get these options. I have tried the lot:
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-16-generic
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-16-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-15-generic
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-15-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic
Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 9.04, memtest86+
These kernel no.s remind me of a SUDO test line result.
It could not locate fglrx.ko in the DKMS tree.
It wanted a DKMS Build for kernel 2.6.28-16-generic fglrx (8.600)
I wish I knwew what all that's about. I may be able sort it then without having to bother busy people like you.
If you could perhaps guide me with some inquiry command lines, I can get to drop to a root shell prompt, and get you some answers - perhaps.
It's certainly a long learning curve after learning a little DOS, Iknow that much.

I looked up the Thinkpad 600 and found it doesn't even use an ATI graphics card, so this would not work for your system.
You are able to boot another version of the live/Desktop cd so you can back up your data if you need to reinstall, but you should be able to fix your graphics driver.
To do that, please try ubuntuforums.org. They can better assist you.
