Using the XO (OLPC) for data recovery.

I think the OLPC project is great. I agree that computer hardware today is so redundant that it is an exercise in waste. To that end, in just over a month I will be buying an XO through the give one get one program.
Looking through the specs, I am certain the rescue-remix will be able to boot on it. By plugging in your storage hardware through USB2 ports, you should be able to accomplish any data recovery task you need.
I look forward to releasing the next version (8.04) of the Rescue-remix as XO-ready.

Have you considered the Asus
Have you considered the Asus Eee PC for doing drive imaging and other Rescubuntu related work?
It might make an nice ultraportable setup for doing data recovery.
I think your gesture of 'give one get one' for the OLPC is very kind however.
I think the Asus laptop
I think the Asus laptop looks great. For many data recovery tasks, CPU power is not that important. If your drive is going to take a whole day to image, it doesn't matter whether you have a 433 MHz processor, a 3GHz processor or a 900 Mhz one.
My point with the OLPC is simply to show that it can be done. I'm a fan of simplicity; I think things should get more simple as they evolve, and not just more bulky. If I can chose to use an environmentally-friendly device to do my tasks, I will. If by doing that I can support the OLPC project, that's great, too.
